Tankless Water Heater Maintenance

With the cost of housing on the rise, many families are turning to energy-efficient appliances to save money and reduce costs. It makes sense that we want to save wherever we can. Reducing our energy use is a good way to save money over time, and a tankless water heater will do just that! In addition to requiring less maintenance than a traditional water heater, tankless water heaters take up less space, last longer, and reduce energy costs.

As with any appliance, your new tankless water heater will require regular maintenance to stay in good working order. The great news is that a well-maintained system, even with the cost of regular maintenance, will still save you more money than a traditional water heater ever could.

Things to consider in the maintenance of your tankless water heater:

What kind of water do you have?

In places with hard water, you’ll need to be more diligent in maintaining your system than if you have soft water. Hard water creates “scale”, which is a buildup of minerals inside your unit. You will need to have it descaled 1-2 times per year. If you live in an area with soft water, you would have your system flushed once per year. Even soft water will leave deposits, just not as much as hard water.

Are your pipes in good shape?

When you have your unit installed, make sure you hire a reputable plumbing installer (we do installations as well as maintenance!). Your pipes will need to be checked once a year for good measure to make sure the seals are in good working order. Check for small leaks that might affect your water pressure and the overall operation of your unit. If you purchase regular tank maintenance, this will be included in your service.

A word about filters…

Tankless water heaters rely on a filter that prevents lime and other minerals from building up in your system. Changing the filter once a year along with a flush is key to keeping your unit in top condition. A healthy filter changed regularly will add to the lifespan of your unit.

Can I perform the maintenance myself?

Absolutely! However, it can be time-consuming, and without the right know-how, you might miss something important. There are DIY flush kits that you can buy at the hardware store to do this yourself but be prepared to spend some time on YouTube making sure you do it correctly; after all, a tankless system can be pricey to replace.

Is regular maintenance expensive? How much should I budget each year?

Regular appliance maintenance always costs less in the long run than having to repair a broken unit, but the good news is that you can schedule regular maintenance checks with us. We will even do a free consultation with you to go over a maintenance schedule. You will feel at ease knowing that your investment will be taken care of by trained professionals, giving you more time to enjoy your home worry-free.

Working with a licensed and insured plumbing contractor is the first and best step to avoiding emergencies due to appliance failure.
